The Penn State Scandal: Why We Always Need to Do the Right Thing

Parent Blogger The infuriating events at Penn State bring me to my #1 rule of parenting, which is Do the Right Thing. Others have called what has happened at Penn State sad. I call it infuriating. It is infuriating because I am left feeling equal parts anger and frustration. The frustrating part is that the adults in charge acted, as commentator Jay Bilas said, as a conspiracy of cowards. All those who had the chance to step up and do the right thing did not. They did the easy thing, and the results of their poor decisions are there for all to see.

Your Turn to Sound Off: Tell Us What You Think about Empowering Parents

Blogger Here we are, the start of the new year and a chance for all of us to take stock of how far we've come in the past 12 months -- and to think about where we'd like to see ourselves headed in 2009. My friend Brooke calls this a Top of the Ladder Moment:  When one of her young children accomplishes something (like climbing the ladder of the biggest slide at the park for the first time) she  says it's important to take a minute and tell her kids, Hey, look and see how far you've come! You did it!  The truth is, those little moments of validation are important for all of us.

EP is Looking for Parent-bloggers!

Blogger

Over the last year, you've shared your stories with us on Empowering Parents, via our blog and website, and we've listened. In fact, we've laughed along with you at some of the humorous parenting moments you've experienced, and even gotten teary to hear about  the darkest hours we've all lived through as we've raised our kids. Now EP would like to ask you to blog for us--that's right, we're asking you, our readers, to write about the trials and travails of parenthood. In particular, we'd like bloggers who are able to write eloquently on subjects like their ADHD or ODD child, Single Parenting, Stepparenting, Grandparents raising grandkids, Parenting adult children, or how you're doing as you work through the Total Transformation Program with your family.  After that, it's all up to you. We have 130,000 readers out there who are waiting to hear from you! And we can give your blog a home on the award winning EmpoweringParents.com, one of the hottest new sites for parenting issues on the web. (iParenting award, Best parenting websites, 2008.)

We want you to blog on your day–to–day life experiences and tell others how you navigate through all the joys and hardships of parenting—and what you've done that's worked to help your child's behavior. Our other readers will be commenting and chiming in, helping to further grow the community we've created on EP. We're hoping you'll jump in and participate in the first of our unpaid citizen blogs—and reach out to other parents who know what you're going through.

E-mail us at editor@empoweringparents.com with your idea, your resume, a writing sample, and a link to your current blog (if you have one). We respond to every request, so contact us today!
