Great training for child care workers

This training has been very helpful for child care workers who live and work with youth who are at-risk.

I felt the guide to consequences was very helpful. I really like seeing the role playing.

    Very Helpful!

I purchased this video for my sister (who has a 12 year old son), but my husband and I decided to watch it before we gave it away. We have a daughter who just finished her Freshman year of college, but who is having a difficult time "growing up" and taking responsiblity for herself. We found a number More of very helpful ideas that we can (and already have) used with her to make it clear that we mean business and attach unemotional yet meaningful consequences to her lack of responsiblity. It is working, and her level of respect for us has also gone up.

Program was great. My son is 8 years old. The exercises seamed more geared to teenagers. I'm sure it will come in handy later in his life.

    Right On Target

My only problem was that it was not long enough. More examples would be very helpful, even though these were excellent.

    Great and to the point!

Overall, this was a very good parenting presentation with excellent role-plays of how-to and not-to use appropriate consequences especially with teenagers. I am social worker who works with families who have difficulties in parenting their children. I like this presentation because it specifically tells More parents how to set up effective consequences ant then it shows them how to do it. Plus, the presentation is the perfect length for a busy parent to review.

    Common Sense

Much of what was said really was common sense, if only we would think this way. But, it was helpful to hear it the way you put it. I have stopped with consequences that have nothing to do with the "crime", which seems to have at the very least improved the relationship. Thank you!!

    A Nice Reality Check

This video was helpful in that it gave us some important insight into our child's point of view. As parents, we often react on an emotional level to the things our kids do or say and usually, we don't think beyond our words or actions to see if what we are doing is even working (which it probably isn't More or we wouldn't have needed the video). James Lehman gives straight forward advice that will really help you solve your problems, not make you feel all warm and fuzzy. It requires work on your part but, with the work, (and with the realization that your kids really do "tune you out" when you go into a half hour lecture), you will see progress. After watching this video, it was clear to me how commited James Lehman is to helping families find peace. One thing I would have liked to have seen in the role playing would have been some less intense situations. I realize for many families, yelling, screaming and vulger disrespect are common occurances. But for some of us, that isn't the case and the less intense situations can be just as damaging to the family. It was a little hard to relate to some of the role playing, but I understand it's value.

    consequences

The whole guide was helpful with dealing with my 15 year old son. It took just a few days to really get things under control and back to normal. Thank you so much for the program.

    Consequences Review

The most important thing I learned was that an effective consequence changes the problem behavior. The role playing gave me a few catch phrases to use that have been effective with my son. Also, I learned to treat these aspects of parenting more like business deals than emotional/moral events. I More also learned how to clean up a situation that I didn't handle so well. I'm also a special education teacher and will use these principals in my classroom.

    consequences video

First of all, any good advice is helpful, especially when you don't know what to do. It has also taught me to try and keep myself calm. I didn't realize wording something one way and saying the same thing another way could be so different, until watching the video. I like the DVD's better than the More audio, because I fall asleep listening to an audio tape as opposed to watching a video and listening.

    Addresses Real-Life Issues

This video is great - it provides simple techniques that are effective in actually helping teens learn how to modify their own behavior. It addresses common issues with teens, including some that are on the extreme side, behaviors which are frequently not addressed by other sources. I liked both James More Lehman's soft-spoken but direct style when he explains what works, and the role plays that show "before" (yelling and huge consequences)and "after" (calm statements with relevant and effective consequences). I recommend this video to parents of teenagers who want to strive towards keeping their cool and maintaining the focus on helping the teen learn more self-control and responsibility over time. I will watch it again from time to time, I think the repetition will help me follow the tips when issues come up and I need to take constructive action. As a single mom, I think both my two teenage girls and I will benefit. Thank you for creating this wonderful learning video!

    Great, practical insights

Thank you for the complete guide to consequences, I have a 16yr old daughter who is very assertive and determined to have fun and ignore boundaries and your program gave me practical tools that I put to practice immediately. Your programs have been life changing and a blessing in my experience with my More daughter, it has done a great deal in improving my relationship with her. Thank you sooo much. Lots of love, Sandra Rafael

    consequences

I really liked it but for some reason all the role play was for older kids and mine are younger. I'm sure I can use some of the training but I'd like to see how situations with the younger kids are handled. Overall, I LOVE your program!!! Please continue your wonderful work.

    review from MN

It was good, we have younger kids so it is geared more to teenagers, but it still is helpful and we will definately watch again during the next few years.

The Most Effective Parent Information Ever

I'm the director of The Ranch of Hope in Texas. I exclusively use the Total Transformation Program (I have it memorized) in Behavior Therapy for the prison inmates (male & female) 90 District Juvenile Probation Dept. court ordered parents education and all Family and Marriage therapy. When the The Complete More Guide to Consequences came out difinetly became the most popular material I have. I will be speaking in Seminars across North Texas on this new program. I will hold parent education classes at the local college to prepare parents for the new school year. I'm talking with the all schools (public & private) to teach this material at in service training to all teachers. I do a lot of reasearch on material for families. I can find nothing that compares with these programs. Our passion is to not only bring hope to families but give them pracital, effective tools that work today. Consequences

The role plays were very helpful and very true to life. Hopefully more training videos will be produced to help parents with ODD kids. (One quick question, was there a workbook that went with the CD? If so, I did not receive one.)

Q: I have both The Total Transformation® Program and The Complete Guide to Consequences. Which program should I start with?

A: You are welcome to start with either program you wish. James Lehman addresses effective consequences in both programs. We typically find that it is most effective to start with the Total Transformation Program first, in order to have a solid foundation for applying the techniques described in The Complete Guide to Consequences.

The James Lehman Approach

Drawing from personal experience and 30 years in the field

“I was a kid with behavior problems—about the worst problems you can imagine.” – James LehmanJames Lehman, MSW

James Lehman, who dedicated his life to behaviorally troubled youth, created The Total Transformation®, The Complete Guide to Consequences™, Getting Through To Your Child™, and Two Parents One Plan™, from a place of professional and personal experience. Having had severe behavioral problems himself as a child, he was inspired to focus on behavioral management professionally. Together with his wife, Janet Lehman, he developed an approach to managing children and teens that challenges them to solve their own problems without hiding behind disrespectful, obnoxious or abusive behavior.
